The Icelandic Research Fund for Graduate Students
The role of the Icelandic Research Fund for Graduate Students is to allocate grants to research related graduate studies undertaken at a university, or in collaboration with research institutions or companies at the university‘s responsibilities. This applies both to studies in Iceland and abroad.
The Icelandic Research Fund for Graduate Students was established in 1993, and has its basis in the Act on Official Support to Scientific Research no. 3/2003. The role of the fund is to allocate grants to research related graduate studies on the foundation of rules provided by the Minister of Education, Science and Culture (no. 16/2008).
According to Act no. 3/2003, paragraph 8, the board of the fund shall publish rules for allocation no later than six weeks before the advertised deadline for proposals.

General Grants
Grants are awarded for' living expenses to students in research related graduate studies. The studies shall fulfil the requirements of the National Qualifications Framework, issud by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, but otherwise adhere to the Higher Education Act, no. 63/2006, rules of specific faculties and general rules of universities. Doctoral students can apply for a grant for up to three years after completion of studies, but Masters students for the time period spanning their dissertation work, for a maximum of four months. The research project should be at least 60 ECTS units. When evaluating applications, special emphasis will be placed on the sscientific value of the research, as well as on the applicant’s study and research results, along with the activity of the supervisor.

Company and Institution Grants (CI-grants)
The goal of the CI-grants is to strengthen the cooperation between institutions, companies and universities. Businesses and institutions should define in advance which professional field is to receive the grant. The grant is created by joint financing between business/institution and the Icelandic Research Fund for Graduate Students. The studies shall fulfil the requirements of the National Qualifications Framework, issud by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, but otherwise adhere to the Higher Education Act, no. 63/2006, rules of specific faculties and general rules of universities.
The next application deadline for CI-grants will be 15 March 2012.
