New publication of research and development statistics

These new statistics on domestic expenditure for research and development (R&D) show that the total R&D expenditure in Iceland amounted to 28 billion ISK (ca. 335 MEUR) in 2005. As a share of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), R&D expenditure accounted for 2,8%.  From 2003 to 2005 total R&D expenditure in fixed prices has increased by 4 billion ISK (ca. 48 MEUR) or by 16%.  Of all sectors, R&D expenditure was highest (34%) in the health sector.  These figures and many more can be found in the new RANNIS publication which can be dowloaded from this site

Technology innovation: Iceland ranked 8th

Denmark is now regarded as the world leader in technological advancement, with its Nordic neighbours Sweden, Finland, Iceland and Norway claiming second, fourth, eigth and tenth place respectively.  The US is now ranked seventh and is therefore no longer the 'technology king'.  The report, with this information and more, can be downloaded at the World Economic Forum website.

Conference: Gender Issues in Research

The conference Gender Issues in Research - Innovation through Gender Equality will be held in Berlin on 18 - 19 April, 2007 within the framework of the German EU Presidency.  The conference is intended to explore the new structures, measures and activities which are being developed in Germany to ensure equal opportunities for women scientists.

The Nordic Innovation Centre has published the report: Putting Intellectual Capital into Practice, Nordic Harmonized Knowledge Indicators. The authors were Asta Thorleifsdottir and Eggert Claessen.

The EU launches the ERAWATCH® service web site

ERAWATCH® provides information on national research policies, structures, programmes and organisations. The aim of this service is to support policy making in the research field in Europe, by facilitating a better knowledge and understanding of national research systems, policies and the environments in which they operate.
Currently 37 countries are covered. With the service's evolution regional and other coverage is expected to increase over time.  The Icelandic site will be monitered and updated by a correspondent from UNU-MERIT. ERAWATCH is a joint initiative of the European Commission's Directorates General for Research and Joint Research Centre- Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS).
