WIRE 2012 Conference
Delivering the Innovation Union at Regional Level
The Week of Innovative Regions in Europe (WIRE 2012) will focus this year on smart regional development based on knowledge and innovation; it will address main current issues related to the effective implementation of the Innovation Union at regional level for the next period 2014-2020.
The event will be organised in close cooperation with the European Commission and will take place in Krakow, Poland on 4-5 June 2012. The aim of the WIRE2012 conference is to present both main challenges and barriers concerning the development of innovation in regions and to elaborate recommendations for European and regional innovation policy- makers. The issue to be tackled is how to implement the Innovation Union at the Regional level;it will address three main thematic pillars:
- Innovative regions in the Horizon 2020 will investigate the role of regions in smart specialisation, the role of cities as innovation hubs, and regional innovation ecosystems within Horizon 2020;
- Stairway to Excellence will focus on the future of research and innovation at the regional level, on synergies between Horizon 2020 and the Cohesion Policy, and on smart specialisation in convergence regions and Centres of Excellence;
- Networking for ERA at Regional Level will discuss the European Territorial. Cooperation, networks of clusters, European Groupings of Territorial Cooperation, networks of research infrastructure and Multiregional Knowledge Partnerships (e.g. Danube, Baltic).

Workshop on the Economics of Information Security
The 11th Annual Workshop on the Economics of Information Security will take place from 25 to 26 June 2012 in Berlin, Germany.
As information security and privacy continue to grow in importance, threats to privacy are proliferating. The security of information systems and the privacy offered by them depends on more than just technology. They require an understanding of the incentives and trade-offs inherent to the behaviour of people and organisations. This necessitates careful research to accurately characterise threats and countermeasures, in both the public and private sectors.
This event will look into empirical and analytic tools to not only shed light on threats, but also to highlight security and privacy through novel evaluations of available solutions. Specific topics are set to include:
- optimal investment in information security;
- models and analysis of online crime (including botnets, phishing, and spam);
- risk management and cyber-insurance;
- security standards and regulation;
- cyber-security policy;
- security models and metrics;
- economics of privacy and anonymity;
- behavioural security and privacy;
- vulnerability discovery, disclosure, and patching;
- cyber-defence strategy and game theory;
- incentives for information sharing and cooperation.

AGI & Constructivist AI Summer School
Home Page: http://wiki.humanobs.org/public:events:agi-summerschool-2012
Detailed Schedule: http://wiki.humanobs.org/public:events:agi-summerschool-2012:schedule
The AGI Summer School is part of the HUMANOBS project which is sponsored by a European FP7 ICT Research Project Grant. Additional support is provided by Reykjavik University and the Icelandic Institute for Intelligent Machines.
Summary
Fundamental problems are presented and dissected, including:
• What kinds of methodologies will be required to achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI)?
• How different will they be from today's software development methods?
• What role can logic and reasoning play?
• How do we construct highly distributed architectures for these purposes?
• Do we need new programming languages?
Starting with the limitations of present software development methodologies based on hand-coded knowledge it lays the ground for new methodologies involving self-organizing and self-programming systems - what we call constructivist AI - and presents recent advances in reasoning-based and self-expanding architectures.
Hands-on work will include experiments in the newly-developed programming language Replicode, which has been explicitly created for AI systems capable of self-inspection.
This summer school focuses on issues related to the original goal of artificial general intelligence, namely that of building machines capable of operating in a range of different environments and domains, and doing a range of unrelated tasks in a coordinated manner, with a special focus on methodology, integration, and architecture.
Organization
The summer school is organized around three key threads. The first, and main one, relates to constructionist versus constructivist AI methodologies, self-programming, introspection and logic. The second is the theoretical foundation of AI, the difference between cognitive science and AI, and the basic principles on which AI currently stands. The third and last is the role of AI in society, current academic and industrial methods used to advance it, and societal changes that may be expected from its development in the next 20 years.
Who Should Attend?
The summer school is targeted to those with a background in artificial intelligence and computer science, and may also be of interest to students in philosophy, psychology and cognitive science with a background in software developments or mathematics. It is open to all graduate students in all countries; the teaching language is English. The upper limit of attendees is 35, accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Application
To apply for admission, send an email with a short cover letter and a CV to the following email address: summerschool-2012@cadia.ru.is. Acceptance decisions will be sent out via return email, at the latest March 1st 2012. Further details will be announced on this website. Questions about the summer school can be sent to thorisson@ru.is.

International Conference on Science Communication
Science Communication : International Perspectives, Issues and Strategies
4 - 7 September 2012, Nancy (France)
Universities and research organisations are vibrant communities fully engaged in science communication. Their actions are all the more important because the relationship between science, technology and society at large is at the heart of current debate, particularly at a time when the rapid expansion of digital technology opens up uncountable modes of interaction between producers and users of information. This conference intends to take a closer look at the new forms of dialogue between those who are directly involved in the production of knowledge and those for whom ethical, political and economic questions linked to research and its outcomes are considered just as important as the progress of knowledge.

International Conference on Culture, Politics and Climate Change
Deadline for abstracts: January 10, 2012
This cross-disciplinary conference will explore intersections between culture, politics, and science in order to enhance our understanding of public policy addressing climate change. The conference will interrogate the many obstacles and opportunities confronting U.S. climate policymakers and scientists. Presenters will be asked to broadly consider how climate change is communicated and how these processes intersect with ongoing cultural and political issues. While we will focus on climate change, authors are encouraged to draw lessons that can be applied to a variety of environmental contexts. Comparative papers and panels that explore similarities and differences between culture, politics, and climate policy in the U.S. and other countries are encouraged.
Discussions about climate change, policy, and science arise in a variety of cultural settings. Questions of how and whether to address climate change on a national and global scale are significant parts of political and cultural discourse. How policy is made, the role of state and non-state actors, the communication of science and values, and how meaning is derived from our shared culture are all questions that directly influence policy outcomes. In the context of U.S. national elections and ongoing international climate negotiations, these considerations are especially relevant. This conference will address these questions in the context of the 2012 elections, the COP-18 climate talks, and other cultural developments.
Keynote speakers will include:
- Raymond Bradley, University of Massachusetts Amherst
- Mike Hulme, University of East Anglia, UK
- Wendy Parker, Ohio University
- Spencer Weart, Center for History of Physics
Papers and panels on climate change may address, but should not be limited to questions about:
● Communication of science ● Environmental policy and politics ● Social movements/activism ● Political communication of climate change ● Mediated representation ● Non-state actors in climate politics and communication ● Journalism studies ● Visual culture ● Consumer culture studies ● Spiritualities of globalization ● Religions and the environment ● Documentary/feature film ● Environmental ethics ● Philosophy of science
Culture, Politics, and Climate Change Deserai A. Crow, Associate Director, Center for Environmental Journalism www.climateculturepolitics.org This conference is co-sponsored by the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES), Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Colorado Boulder, Advertising a2b, The Committee on the History and Philosophy of Science, the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR), and the CU Environmental Center.
