In 2012, NordForsk, in collaboration with the Academy of Finland; the Swedish Research Council; the Research Council of Norway; the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture of Iceland; the Danish Council for Strategic Research; and the Nordic Council of Ministers, will be issuing calls for proposals under the newly-established Nordic programme Education for Tomorrow.

The programme's primary objectives are to strengthen educational research, to contribute to the development of knowledge-based policy for the educational sector and to disseminate the results to a wide audience.

The calls are divided into groups A and B in relation to their deadlines.

A. Two calls opening in late March with deadline for application submission on 15 May 2012

1. The first call for proposals is jointly funded by the Nordic countries and has a total budget of NOK 35 million. The call will be directed towards large-scale, interdisciplinary research projects. Projects are to address the challenges facing the Nordic educational systems and the reasons underlying the differences demonstrated in their respective performance. Projects should incorporate an interdisciplinary or comparative approach. We are looking for new knowledge in areas such as:

  • Teaching and learning: new contexts, contents and methods
  • Leadership and management: new instruments and incentives
  • Governance: internationalisation and multi-level governance
  • Education and the welfare state
  • Equity and equal access

Proposals that extend across more than one thematic area are particularly encouraged.

2. The second call is funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers and has a budget of approximately NOK 4 million. This call is for projects within the thematic area of Nutrition, Learning and Health via the Nordic Globalisation Initiative for Health and Welfare. The duration of the project(s) under this call is maximum two years. This call for proposals will provide funding for interdisciplinary research projects that study the conditions relating to meals in schools and pre-schools and the impact of this on learning in the Nordic countries. Research projects should seek to incorporate and assess relevant parameters relating to ethnic, gender and socio-economic differences.

Both calls for proposals are open to researchers and research groups at academic institutions and research institutes in the Nordic countries and the autonomous areas.

The formal applicant must be an institution/organisation/legal entity in one of the countries. All grant proposals must include participants from at least three Nordic countries.

B. One call opening in late September 2012 with deadline for application submission on 6 November 2012

Under this call funding may be sought for a Nordic Centre of Excellence (NOK 20 million). The call is seeking forward-looking proposals that aim to generate new knowledge to enhance our understanding of education and the educational systems, as well as to explore coming challenges and the role of education in the society of tomorrow.
