Although difficult, valuing health is crucial to inform health policy. In this research project we used the compensating income variation (CIV) method to estimate the sufficient monetary compensation needed to offset the welfare losses associated with the presence of sub-optimal conditions.

The statistical association between income, sub-optimal conditions, and well-being was used to generate an implied trade-off between income and the condition being evaluated each time. Despite methodological advantages over other willingness-to-pay methods, the CIV literature is still very limited but through this project we have measured the value of close to 80 conditions, some in quite general terms, but others in greater detail with multiple valuation calculations made depending on context, severity, and circumstances. We have additionally been able to contribute to the field methodologically. We have thus been able to make both broad-view analyses, as well as more in-depth examinations of specific diseases or conditions. This research has a practical relevance, especially in Iceland where the value of health has not yet been estimated. The scientific value lies both in the fact that the CIV method provides a robustness check for other methods traditionally used within the field of health economics, and in an opportunity to value health states in circumstances where they have not been valued before and/or with greater ease than other methods allow for. For this reason, the project also has practical applications. We therefore conducted analyses for public and private collaborators that were used for policy purposes.

Reports have been made to retirement homes, and the cabinet for policy purposes. The team has given countless talks, both internationally (albeit often virtually due to covid) and domestically. A ConCIV website was created, and a and application has been made to fund an App to easily retract and convert data from the literature to policy applicable formats. The project will furthermore result in two doctoral dissertations (by Anna Guðrún Ragnarsdóttir and Kristjana Baldursdóttir - undefended at this point) and has resulted in multiple theses at the BS and MS levels, reported in Skemman (for example by Brynja Jónbjarnardóttir, Gísli Gylfason, Ásthildur Margrét Jóhannsdóttir, and Þórhildur Magnúsdóttir).
