The project aimed at developing novel strategies for the automatic analysis and detection of changes occurred on areas of interest.

The project “Change detection methods in optical remote sensing” aimed at developing novel strategies for the automatic analysis and detection of changes occurred on areas of interest. The change detection analysis focused on change detection in earth observation (EO) data and in particular optical data corresponding to multispectral and hyperspectral sensors.

In particular, pre- and post- processing algorithms have been developed to improve state-of-the-art methods in both the automation of the analysis and the computational efficiency of the data processing, providing higher quality change detection maps.

Thanks to the capability of the software at identifying different kind of changes in automatic way, it will facilitate the updating of those areas affected by change due to natural phenomena and human activities, improving the efficiency of decision-making process on land use planning.

As result of the research project, a toolbox has been released as open source software for Matlab environment. The software is at the moment exploited within the RANNIS funded “EMMIRS” project, aimed at analysing changes in highly dynamic areas of Hekla and Öræfajökull, and within the EU funded “NORTH STATE” project, aimed at mapping and monitoring boreal forests.
