Concussions are a prominent risk factor when competing and training sports. Women are hugely underrepresented in the concussion literature despite being more at risk of getting a concussion and having worse outcomes than men. The study: Concussion among Icelandic athletes: A multi-component study aims to assess concussion incidents among Icelandic athletes and assess concussion history among female athletes and how mental health, mental functioning and physiological factors could be affected by concussion history.

Results will benefit the whole sports community and health care providers, and when planning successful prevention and treatment strategies. Few studies have examined female athletes, which is a problem and can even be harmful as women might react differently to treatment and have a different risk and vulnerability factors than men. This study offers an opportunity to study a group that is underrepresented in the concussion research community. The study also offers a unique opportunity to study complex clinical profiles based on concussion history, which will be beneficial in clinical and practical settings in the future. In addition, no known concussion study has been done that is as comprehensive as this one. This project could thus have a significant impact in Iceland as well as internationally.

The following papers have been published or are under currently under review: 1/ Concussions Among Icelandic Female Athletes: Self-Reported Prevalence With and Without Definition of Concussion, 2/ Concussion among female athletes in Iceland: Stress, depression, anxiety, and quality of life, 3/ Methodology matters: Added information affects the self-report of concussions and symptoms among female athletes 4/ Concussion history, mental health, and attention-related errors among Female Amateur MMA Fighters at the 2019 IMMAF European Championship: A descriptive study. At least three more papers will be sent in to be published this year.
