The project seeks to account for formal change within the inflectional paradigms of Faroese and Icelandic nouns in terms of the impact of domain-general cognitive processes on language use, both in on-line communication and over time.
The resulting demonstrates that the mechanism of change within inflectional paradigms –– and language change in general –– is characterised by processes such as statistical learning, entrenchment, analogical reasoning and categorisation via prototype. The combined effects of the cognitive processes just listed serve to facilitate a cline of productivity among inflectional patterns that is mediated by properties of language use, chiefly among which is frequency of use (both token and type). Thus, the thesis can be viewed as a contribution to the ever-expanding field of usage based cognitive linguistics. The project has yielded various outputs, most of which have sprung from collaboration with other linguists across various countries and institutions. In terms of the presentation of research, presentations on the various findings of the project have been given at eight separate conferences in Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Denmark, Finland, the USA, Russia and China. Further, collaborative efforts with Aarhus University and the University of Greenland have given rise to two conferences, one in Aarhus, and the other in Reykjavík. The result of this collaboration has been the publication of two peer reviewed articles, with two others currently undergoing the peer review process. The thesis for which the research grant was awarded will be submitted and defended this year (2021), with a view to it forming the basis for further articles, presentations, and the extension of the current network with a view to encouraging further international collaboration.
