The project has focused on different approaches to plasmon polariton waveguiding, amplification, field enhancement, and low-loss propagation. 

The work has been based partly on a detailed study of deposition of noble metals (mainly gold) on optically transparent substrates. Methods have been developed to suppress surface diffusion of gold, resulting in the realization of continuous films substantially thinner than previously reported in literature. The plasmonic waveguiding and classical and quantum transmission properties of such films have been studied.  In addition, guiding properties, directional coupling and high-speed data transmission in novel high-confinment low-loss plasmonic waveguide geometries have been studied.

Finally, unsuppressed surface diffusion of gold was used to prepare novel gold nanostructures for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) applications. The results generated within the project have potential impact within several scientific and technical fields, including low-loss plasmonic waveguiding and amplification, chemical detection, use of ultra-thin gold films as transparent contacts in light-emitting and light-harvesting devices, and development of highly integrated plasmonic circuits.
